Pocket alternatives, especially if you listened
Read-it-later apps compared · Updated October 2026
The short answer. Mozilla shut Pocket down on July 8, 2025, and exports ended on November 12, 2025. For saving and reading, Instapaper is the closest match and has a free plan. If you used Pocket's Listen button, Instapaper reads aloud for free with your phone's voices, and Premium ($5.99 a month) adds AI voices and playlists. Readwise Reader suits heavy readers who highlight. If you mostly want to hear articles, a listening app is simpler.
What happened to Pocket
Mozilla announced on May 22, 2025 that it was closing Pocket. The apps left the app stores that day and new sign-ups stopped. Pocket stopped working on July 8, 2025, and stayed open only for exports until November 12, 2025, when Mozilla disabled exports and the API and queued all saved data for deletion. Mozilla didn't name a replacement. It pointed people to Firefox's tab groups and bookmarks.

Pocket also had Listen in its iPhone and Android apps. It read saved articles aloud with Amazon Polly voices, with a speed control and a button to skip to the next article. If that's the part you miss, look at the "Reads aloud" column below. Most read-it-later apps treat listening as an extra.
Moving your saves
You can no longer request a Pocket export. If you downloaded one before November 12, 2025, these apps can import it:
- Instapaper imports Pocket exports. Instapaper's Pocket page
- Readwise Reader takes the
pocket.zipfile. Readwise: migrating content - Raindrop.io takes the HTML export. Raindrop.io: import
- Wallabag takes the CSV export. Wallabag: migrate from Pocket
If you never exported, your saves are gone. Your browser history and bookmarks may still hold some of the links.

The alternatives, one by one
Instapaper
The closest thing to Pocket: save from a browser extension or the share sheet, read in a clean view, with a free plan. Text-to-speech is free with your phone's built-in voices, one article at a time, and works in CarPlay. Premium adds 17 AI voices and playlists that play saved articles in a row. You also get a private email address you can forward or subscribe newsletters to. Sources: Instapaper Premium, Instapaper text to speech.
Readwise Reader
A reading app for people who highlight and take notes. It takes articles, RSS feeds, PDFs and newsletters sent to your own Reader address, and reads any of them aloud with AI voices. There's no free plan: after a 30-day trial, Reader alone costs $7.99 a month paid yearly or $8.99 month to month, and full Readwise is $9.99 or $12.99. Text to speech needs an internet connection. Matter
A polished reader with a strong listening side: HD voices, a queue it calls a playlist, and highlights you can make while listening. Most of that is Premium, which the US App Store lists at $79.99 a year. There's no Android app. Source: Matter in the App Store.
Raindrop.io
A bookmark manager more than a reader. It's good for organising thousands of links into collections, and Pro is only $28 a year. We found no text-to-speech in its help pages, so it's not a pick for listening. Source: Raindrop.io limits.
Wallabag
Open source, and free if you run it on your own server. The hosted wallabag.it costs €11 a year. Its Android and iPhone apps can read articles aloud with your phone's voices. Source: wallabag.it pricing.
Omnivore, another free Pocket alternative, closed in November 2024 when its team joined ElevenLabs.
If listening was the point: Spokeninbox
If you saved articles to hear them on a walk or a commute, you may not need a full read-it-later app. Spokeninbox is a listening app. You add an article's link, check the text it pulls in, and press Play. Articles sit in the same inbox as newsletters you forward to your private address, so the reading pile from your email and the one from the web end up in one list.
- Natural AI voices for every article, in English, Spanish and Russian.
- A queue with autoplay in the web app and the Mac and Windows apps, so a list plays through without touching the screen.
- Lock-screen playback on iPhone, picking up where you stopped in each article.
- PDFs and pasted text too. See article to audio and read a PDF aloud.
To be clear about what it isn't: there's no browser extension yet, no Pocket import, no highlights and no tags. It can't fetch paywalled articles, though you can paste text you can read. If you want a library to read and annotate, pick Instapaper or Readwise Reader.
