Voice Dream Reader alternatives
iPhone, iPad and Mac readers compared · Updated October 2026
The short answer. Voice Dream Reader was sold in 2023 and became a subscription for new users. In 2024 the new owner agreed that earlier buyers keep the features they paid for. It's still updated and still the strongest choice for offline voices, DAISY and Bookshare. If you want to stop paying, try Apple's free Speak Screen and Accessibility Reader or ElevenReader's free plan. If most of your reading is newsletters and articles, look at Spokeninbox.
What changed at Voice Dream
Winston Chen built Voice Dream Reader and sold it for a one-time price for years. In 2023 he sold it to Applause Group. On April 25, 2023 it became a subscription for new users, at $59.99 a year, and existing buyers were told nothing would change for them. Chen kept the Scanner and Writer apps under a new company. In March 2024 Applause said every user would need a subscription from May 1, 2024, including people who had already paid. After a strong backlash from blind and low-vision users, it reversed course on April 7, 2024: existing buyers keep the app's existing features at no extra cost, and only some new features may need a subscription. Today the app is called Voice Dream - Natural Reader in the US App Store. New users need a subscription after a free trial. The listing shows several plans, including $79.99 a year and $4.99 a month, so check which one you're offered. The Mac app is a separate subscription. It's still maintained: the iPhone app had several updates between December 2025 and August 2026.
What Voice Dream still does best
- Offline voices. Its built-in and add-on voices, from Acapela and others, work without a connection.
- Accessible books. It reads DAISY books and connects to Bookshare, plus PDF, Word, PowerPoint, RTF, EPUB and web articles.
- A scanner for printed pages, for Latin-alphabet languages.
- iCloud sync of your library and reading position across iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- Fine control over pronunciation, highlighting and reading layout.
If you rely on those, especially offline voices and DAISY, no alternative below fully replaces it.

Free alternatives on iPhone and iPad
- Speak Screen reads whatever is on the screen, in any app. Turn it on in Settings, then Accessibility, then Read & Speak, and swipe down from the top with two fingers. See our Speak Screen guide.
- Accessibility Reader opens text in a full-screen reading view and can read it aloud, with an option to keep going on its own. Start it from Control Center or the Share menu. Source: Apple Support.
- Safari has Listen to Page in the page menu for articles.
- On a Mac, Speak selection reads any text you select. See Mac read aloud.
None of these keep a library or remember your place in a book. They're for reading what's in front of you.
Paid alternatives
ElevenReader
From ElevenLabs, with some of the most natural AI voices available. It imports PDFs, EPUBs, links, pasted text and scans, and its free plan includes 10 hours a month. It doesn't have Voice Dream's offline built-in voices, though Ultra ($11 a month) adds offline downloads. See our ElevenReader comparison.
Speechify
Apps on every platform, a camera scanner and a large voice library. It costs more than Voice Dream. See our Speechify comparison.
NaturalReader
Strong on documents, with Word and PowerPoint support and MP3 downloads on paid plans, and it runs on Android too. See our NaturalReader comparison.
For email, newsletters and articles: Spokeninbox
If you used Voice Dream mostly for web articles and newsletters, Spokeninbox does that job for less. Forward newsletters to your private address, or paste an article's link, and press Play. It strips buttons, footers and raw links before reading, keeps playing with the iPhone locked, and remembers where you stopped in each item.
It isn't a Voice Dream replacement for books. It doesn't read EPUB, DAISY or Bookshare titles, has no offline voices because audio is made on our servers, and doesn't scan printed pages. It reads PDFs with selectable text; see read a PDF aloud.

Good morning. This week's recipe is a simple lentil soup that takes about thirty minutes and keeps well for days. Soften one chopped onion, two carrots and a stick of celery in olive oil. Add two cloves of garlic, a teaspoon of cumin and a pinch of chili flakes. Stir in a cup of red lentils, a tin of chopped tomatoes and four cups of stock. Simmer for twenty minutes, until the lentils fall apart. Finish with a squeeze of lemon and a handful of chopped parsley. Serve with warm bread.
