Can Siri read your emails?

So can Siri read emails well enough to get through your inbox? Not really. It is good at telling you who wrote to you. It is slow and fussy when you want to hear what they said. Below are the exact commands, what Siri reads and skips, how it works with Gmail, Outlook, AirPods and CarPlay, and what to do when Siri only reads the subject line.

How to get Siri to read your emails

Wake Siri the usual way: say “Siri” or “Hey Siri,” or press and hold the side button. Then try one of these:

• “Read me my emails.” Siri goes through your inbox, reading the sender and subject of each message and pausing between them.
• “Read my latest email.” Reads the full text of your newest message.
• “Do I have any new email?” Tells you what has arrived.
• “Check my email from Sam.” Lists only the messages from one person.
• “Read that one.” Say this when Siri pauses after a message to hear its full text. You can also pick by position: “Read the third one.”

Apple's own guide only lists “Read me my emails.” The others are phrasings people have used for years on Apple's support forum. Siri's wording changes between iOS versions, so if one phrase doesn't work, try another way of saying it.

What Siri reads, and why it skips the body

When you ask Siri to read your email, it reads a summary line for each message: the day or time, the sender and the subject. Then it asks if you want to hear the next one. It does not read the message itself.

That is by design. Siri treats your inbox like a list to scan, not a set of letters to read out. To hear an email's body, you have to ask for that one email, and then ask again for the next. There is no “keep reading” mode that plays one email after another.

When Siri does read a full email, it reads all of it. Disclaimers, signatures and long quoted replies come along with the part you wanted. Newsletters built mostly from images and layout may have little plain text for Siri to read at all.

There is also a long-running complaint on Apple's forums: Siri stops reading bodies and goes back to subjects only, even when asked for “the text of the last email.” People report it coming and going with iOS updates. See the fixes below.

Does Siri read Gmail or Outlook emails?

Not from the Gmail or Outlook apps. Siri's email reading is built around Apple's Mail app. Apple describes it under “Read and write emails in the Mail app,” and neither Gmail nor Outlook offers the same thing on iPhone. Outlook used to have its own read-aloud feature, Play My Emails, but Microsoft retired it in June 2024.

The easy fix is to add your Gmail or Outlook account to Apple's Mail app. You can keep using the Gmail or Outlook app for everything else.

• Open Settings, tap Apps, then Mail.
• Tap Mail Accounts, then Add Account.
• Enter your email address, tap Next, and sign in.

Once the account shows up in Mail, Siri can read those emails too.

Have Siri read the email on your screen

If the email is already open, in any app, you can ask Siri to read the screen instead. Say “Speak screen.” This uses an iPhone accessibility feature called Speak Screen, and it works in Mail, Gmail, Outlook and everything else.

Turn it on once first: open Settings, then Accessibility, then Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on older iOS versions), and turn on Speak Screen. After that you can also start it by swiping down from the top of the screen with two fingers.

New emails on AirPods and in CarPlay

Announce Notifications

Siri can read your notifications out loud as they arrive when you're wearing AirPods or compatible Beats headphones, or driving with CarPlay. To set it up:

• Open Settings, then Siri (or Apple Intelligence & Siri).
• Tap Announce Notifications and turn it on.
• Tap the app you want to hear from and turn on Announce Notifications for it.

Only apps that support the feature appear in that list, so check whether Mail or your email app is there. What you hear is the notification, a short alert, not the full email. Siri also only announces while your iPhone is locked with the screen dark.

CarPlay

CarPlay doesn't show your inbox on the car's screen, so Siri is the built-in way to hear email while driving. Press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel and say “Read me my emails.” It works the same as on your phone: senders and subjects first, full text only when you ask.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence in iOS 27

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, with a new version of Siri called Siri AI. It is in beta, English only for now, and needs an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 or later. It is not yet available on iPhone in the EU, and Apple says usage limits may apply.

Siri AI can search your mail for you. Apple's example is finding the details of a friend's flight from your email. On the same iPhones, Apple Intelligence also adds a few Mail features:

• Summaries appear under each email in your inbox.
• Summarize: open an email and tap Summarize for a short version of it, or of the whole thread.
• Priority messages put urgent emails, like a boarding pass, at the top of your inbox. Turn them on with Show Priority in your inbox’s menu.

None of these read a whole email aloud. The summaries are on screen, so use Speak Screen if you want to hear one. The classic “Read me my emails” is still in Apple's iOS 27 guide. For other email apps, Siri AI support has to be added by each developer; Apple has said Outlook support, for drafting emails, is coming “soon.”

Hearing email on a Mac

On a Mac, the dependable way to hear an email is the built-in speech feature, not Siri. Open the email in Mail, click in the message, then choose Edit, Speech, Start Speaking. Or turn on Speak selection in System Settings, Accessibility, Read & Speak, then select text and press Option-Esc.

When Siri won't read your email

Siri only reads the subject

• Ask for the body. Reading only senders and subjects is the default. Say “Read that one” when Siri pauses, or “Read my latest email.”
• Check where the email is. Siri reads from Apple's Mail app. An email that only exists in the Gmail or Outlook app is out of its reach.
• Reset Siri. Turn Siri off and on again in Settings, then Siri, restart your iPhone, and install any iOS update.
• Work around it. If Siri still reads headers only, open the email and say “Speak screen.” There is no official fix for the headers-only problem.

Siri says it can't help, or finds no email

• Add your account to Mail. In Settings, Apps, Mail, Mail Accounts, make sure your account is there and Mail is turned on for it.
• Check your connection. Siri needs the internet to work.
• Say it another way. Try “Read me my emails” instead of a longer request.

AirPods don't announce anything

• Your iPhone must be locked with the screen dark, and you must be wearing the headphones.
• Check that Announce Notifications is on for the app, not just switched on overall.
